Elderberry extract aids HDL function
Anthocyanin-rich black elderberry extract improves markers of HDL function and reduces aortic cholesterol in hyperlipidemic mice.
High relevance to cholesterol management
We explored the impact of an anthocyanin-rich black elderberry extract on high cholesterol by conducting a study with apoE(-/-) mice, which are a common model for high cholesterol and HDL dysfunction. Over a period of six weeks, these mice received a diet supplemented with this black elderberry extract while a control group maintained a normal diet.

Our findings were quite promising. Although we didn’t see significant differences in overall serum lipids after six weeks, we did notice improvements in several key markers associated with HDL function. The BEE-fed mice exhibited higher levels of beneficial paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity, which is important for heart health, as well as reductions in liver aspartate transaminase and fasting glucose levels.

Furthermore, the BEE-fed mice had significantly lower levels of a chemokine linked to inflammation, which is beneficial as chronic inflammation can negatively impact cholesterol levels. Most notably, we found reduced total cholesterol levels in the aorta of the elderberry-fed mice, suggesting a slowdown in the progression of atherosclerosis. Overall, this study indicates that black elderberry could potentially help improve HDL function and support the management of high cholesterol as part of a dietary approach.

Relevant findings on cholesterol management
We set out to explore how elderberry, specifically extracts from its flowers and leaves, influences cholesterol levels, particularly in the context of atherosclerosis—a condition where cholesterol builds up in our arteries.

To discover natural substances that could boost cholesterol management, we screened plant extracts for their ability to enhance cholesterol efflux in macrophages, which are cells that can become foam cells when they accumulate too much cholesterol. We found that elderberry extracts increased the expression of a key protein called ABCA1, which aids in this efflux process and consequently reduces foam cell formation.

Importantly, not only did elderberry show promise in promoting healthy cholesterol flow, but it did so without triggering excessive fat production in the liver, which is usually a concern with some treatments. Our findings suggest that elderberry can be a supportive ally in maintaining heart health by helping macrophages manage cholesterol more effectively.

In addition, we identified certain compounds within elderberry, like chlorogenic acid isomers and rutin, which may be behind its beneficial effects. Overall, our research shines a light on elderberry as a natural option for those looking to improve their cholesterol levels without unwanted side effects.

Effects of elderberry juice on fasting and postprandial serum lipids and low-density lipoprotein oxidation in healthy volunteers: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
Modest efficacy for high cholesterol
In our exploration of the effects of elderberry juice on cholesterol, we conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled study. This research involved 34 participants who took capsules containing elderberry extract for two weeks, and a smaller group continued for an additional week to observe any changes in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation.

Additionally, we performed a short-term test with six subjects consuming a single dose of elderberry juice alongside a high-fat breakfast. Our primary goal was to see if elderberry could significantly lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which are often associated with heart health.

The results were notably modest. We observed a small, statistically insignificant decrease in cholesterol levels in the elderberry group compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, there was no change in the resistance of LDL to oxidation. Similarly, the short-term effects of elderberry juice did not result in significant differences in post-meal triglyceride levels.

Ultimately, while elderberry might offer some benefits, we found that its effects on lipid levels and antioxidant capacity were minimal at the doses tested. Higher doses could be necessary to see more pronounced benefits for cholesterol management.
